Hun Sen Commands Military Operations Alongside Prime Minister Hun Manet, Denies Reports of Fleeing, Says Spokesperson

Phnom Penh, July 24, 2025 — Former Prime Minister Hun Sen, now serving as President of the Supreme Privy Council to the King, has been actively directing military operations through video communication channels amid ongoing border clashes with Thailand.

In a statement issued today, Chea Thyrith, spokesperson for Hun Sen, asserted that the former leader remains in Cambodia’s capital, actively overseeing military efforts to defend the nation. “Samdech Techo is currently commanding the armed forces via video system in Cambodia, together with the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Defence, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and all levels of the military, to repel the invading Siamese forces. He is not fleeing anywhere,” Chea Thyrith emphasized.

This statement was issued in response to recent Thai media reports claiming that Hun Sen had fled Phnom Penh and was traveling to China. The Cambodian government dismissed these reports as false and reaffirmed Hun Sen’s presence and leadership within Cambodia during the ongoing border tensions.

The situation along the border remains tense, with Cambodia asserting its right to self-defense and its commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty under international law. Authorities reiterated their dedication to protecting the country through both military and diplomatic means and emphasized that leadership remains unified and resolute in the face of external aggression.
